Longtime Mohawk Trail cross country and track and field coach Joe Chadwick eclipsed 1,400 career wins on Wednesday.

Entering the day with 1,398 victories over his 43 years at the helm, Chadwick reached 1,400 as the Warrior boys cross country team took down Mahar (15-49) and St. Mary’s (15-50) in Buckland.

Mahar added a 15-50 win over St. Mary’s.

Mohawk Trail’s Peter Healy won the race (15 minutes, 51 seconds) while teammates Rex Kuoppala (17:34), Aymeric Louca (17:34), Carson Richardson (17:43), Leo Boltz (18:35) and Gunnar Triggs (18:52) were the next five runners to cross. Aidan Gauthier (eighth, 20:08) and Elias Banks-Breunig (21:29) also finished in the top 10 for the Warriors.

Mahar’s Isiah Whitmore placed seventh while Senator Michael LaPlante came in 10th (21:42).

Evan Hedlund was the first to cross the finish line at the 14 minute, 56 second mark to propel the Redhawks to a trio of wins in South Deerfield Wednesday.

Frontier’s Adam Paul placed second (16:55) while Dean Gray (third, 17:00), Caleb Libbey (sixth, 18:43) and Emerson Clark (10th, 19:25) rounded out the top 10 placers for the Redhawks.

Franklin Tech’s Will Thomas placed ninth (18:59).

Greenfield hosted Hampden Charter on Wednesday, and Hampden Charter didn’t have enough runners to score.

Greenfield’s Ryan Spofford was the winner (19:14) followed by teammates Alex Scotera (19:44), Dylan Breiwick (20:02), Mason Youmell (21:11), Javion Williams (24:02) and Nate Woodard (25:57). Ryan Pedigree (eighth, 26:25), Darby Cardin (29:31) and Jay Philstetler (29:53) rounded out the top 10 placers for the Wave.

Redhawk Louise Flagollet took first (19:56) while Frontier’s Liv Christensen (19:59), Maia Christensen (20:24) and Maddie Antes (20:31) were the next three runners to cross as the Redhawks secured three wins in South Deerfield Wednesday.

Farrah Lemay (21:16) added a sixth place finish for Frontier. Franklin Tech’s Molly Howe came in 10th (22:29).

Mohawk Trail 15, St. Mary’s 50 — The Warriors had the top seven finishers on Wednesday in Buckland, led by Anya Read in first (18:50) to take down the Saints.

Following Read was Natalie Lanoue (19:52), Virginia Krezmien (20:07), Brooke Harrison (22:24), Katie Osterman (24:48), Ella Thompson (25:29) and Georgia Gauthier (26:04).

The Greenfield girls also hosted Hampden Charter on Wednesday, Hampden Charter not having enough runners to score.

The first five finishers were all Wave runners, Lauren Helie first (27:23) followed by Lilly Caron (29:50), Levi Badillo (32:01), Lauren Helie (37:03) and Adele Bross (39:10). Leni Knobloch (seventh, 40:05) also finished in the top 10 for Greenfield.

Boys soccer

Frontier 2, Monument Mountain 1 — Tied 1-1 late, Redhawk Conor Prew found the back of the net off an assist from Hank Pleasant to lift Frontier to a victory at Herlihy Park on Wednesday.

Max Millette opened the scoring for Frontier in the fourth minute off an assist from Eric Larsson. Jack Cusson made four saves in the victory.

Girls soccer

Athol 1, Narragansett 0 — Hannah Cordoso blasted in a goal three minutes into the game and the Bears held on from there and survived a strong second half push from Narragansett to earn the win on the road Wednesday.

Ava Adams made six saves in the victory.

Franklin Tech 2, Hoosac 2 — Trailing 2-0 just 18 minutes into their season opener on the road in Cheshire on Wednesday, the Eagles had their backs against the wall.

But to the delight of head coach Jason Butynski, Franklin Tech battled back.

The visitors pulled within one with a Mady Lynde goal just before halftime, then found the equalizer when Layla Hammond buried a breakaway in the 62nd minute. Goalkeeper Shayly Martin (7 saves) made a pair of huge stops in the final minute, and the Eagles escaped the Berkshires with a point in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.

“Last year we struggled to score goals and getting into a 2-0 deficit was really deflating and defeating for us,” said Butynski. “Today we kept our heads up, and I’m really proud of the toughness that the kids showed.”

Kaelyn Mclean and Lindsey Taylor notched assists for Tech (0-0-1), which also received strong outings from the likes of Payson Lynde, Ariel Peters and Alyssa Peters.

Golf

Athol 168, Smith Vocational 169 — Ethan Heuer carded a team-low 32 as the Bears squeaked out a victory over the Vikings on Wednesday at Wyckoff Country Club.

Owen Stoddard (37), Dom St. Andre (40) and Rafael Lopez (59) rounded out the scoring for Athol.

Frontier 172, Pioneer 197 — Brady Wood and Jacob Cornelison led the way with scores of 43 to lead the Redhawks to a victory at Cherry Hill on Wednesday.

Addy Wood and Teddy McCarthy each carded a 44 for Frontier. Weston Jones (44) and Tucker Aldrich (48) led the Panthers in the loss.

Hopkins 162, Mohawk Trail 205 — Conner Bergeron carded a team-low 43 for the Warriors in a loss to the Golden Hawks at Country Club of Greenfield Wednesday.

Gus Foote (52), Joei Labelle (53) and Jacob Richardson (57) completed the scoring for Mohawk Trail.

Girls volleyball

Turners 3, Athol 1 — Janelle Massey put down five aces to go along with nine kills and one dig as the Thunder picked up a 25-11, 18-25, 25-16, 25-17 triumph in Turners on Wednesday.

Maddie Haight dished 14 assists to go along with 10 aces, two kills and one dig while Maddie Dietz finished with one ace, one kill and 10 digs in the triumph.

Giana Vaillancourt tallied six kills, two aces and three assists, Evelyn Robinson recorded three kills and three digs while Bella Barton dished four assists for Athol.

Franklin Tech 3, Mahar 2 — It came down to a fifth set in Orange on Wednesday, with the Eagles taking the fifth to earn a 25-18, 17-25, 26-24, 11-25, 15-12 win.

Lily Baldwin tallied two aces, one kill, seven digs and 15 assists, Sarah Beckwith recorded seven aces, four kills and 12 digs, Madison Pettingill finished with three aces, nine kills four digs, one assist and one block while Emma Petersen added three aces, four kills, six digs, two assists and three blocks for Franklin Tech.

Madelynn Burgess finished with eight aces, two digs, two kills and five assists, Hayden Comeau tallied four aces and three kills, Mia Santana had three aces and one kill while Angelina Alonso added one ace and three digs for Mahar.

Pioneer 3, Mohawk Trail 1 — After not winning a match a season ago, the Panthers started the 2025 campaign on the right foot.

Jacobia Tyminski (eight aces, eight kills, one block, 13 digs), Greta Lewis (two kills, two digs, 11 aces), Kiara Gruszkowski (four kills, six aces, one dig), Abbie Ray (four aces, three kills, one dig) and Sophia Wood (three aces, three kills, one block) led the way as Pioneer secured a 23-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-11 victory in Northfield.
