‘Take the Cake’ contest returns
NEW SALEM — This year’s Old Home Day on Saturday, Sept. 13, will feature the annual “Take the Cake” contest, hosted by the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art.
Participants are encouraged to bring their best bake and let the community be the judge. The winning baker will receive an award. Contact Laura Barletta at laura@newsalemmuseum.com to register and to pick up contest instructions.
New volleyball net installed
NEW SALEM — The Recreation Committee has announced the installation of a new volleyball net on the town common, with the help of the Highway Department.
Volleyballs and badminton sets are available at the New Salem Public Library for anyone to sign out and use. For more information, contact TaMara Conde at tamara@historicgravestone.com.
New Salem resident graduates from Hobart and William Smith Colleges
GENEVA, N.Y. — New Salem resident Tessa Yohan received a bachelor’s degree in media and society during Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ May 18 commencement ceremony.
Yohan was a four-year member of the college’s swimming and diving team. She was a three-time Anne Richardson Rowley ’82 Most Valuable Swimming and Diving Award recipient, a two-time team captain and a student-athlete representative on the Committee on Athletics. Yohan also served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Through four seasons, she was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll six times. She finished her senior season as the William Smith points leader with 546.15 points and placed Top 20 in the 200- and 100-yard butterfly as well as the 200-yard individual medley at the Liberty League Championships.
Historical Society plans evening of parlor games
ORANGE — The Orange Historical Society has picked Friday, Sept. 12, to celebrate its 130th anniversary with old-fashioned parlor games.
Games set for inside the 41 North Main St. parlor will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be Orange-themed charades, trivia and an identify-the-photo game to test players’ recall of local bygone establishments, memorable personalities and events spanning generations.
Awards and refreshments will follow. Those interested in attending must register by calling Ann Reed at 978-544-3864. There is no admission, but donations will be accepted at the door. The Orange Historical Society, established in 1895, sustains itself on private dollars and volunteerism.
Orange conducting neighborhood inventory
ORANGE — The town is conducting a neighborhood inventory to determine whether a designated study area may qualify for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding under the state and federal “Slum and Blight” designation.
This term is part of the official program language. The “Slum and Blight” designation is a technical requirement that can help unlock funding for infrastructure upgrades, housing rehabilitation and other revitalization efforts.
As part of this initiative, the town — working in partnership with the Franklin Regional Council of Governments and consulting engineers with Tighe & Bond — is launching a field assessment to map surface and underground utility features in the same study area. Residents may notice field staff taking photos and documenting visible infrastructure.
