The recent crackdown on funding for basic research will have serious economic and scientific ramifications for America, well into the future. Since the Nobel Prize was established, American scientists have garnered 70% of the prizes in science and medicine despite the fact that Americans represent only 5% of the world’s population. Interestingly, about 29% of the recipients were immigrants escaping countries which either refused to fund basic research or created hostile working conditions.
The reverse is now happening as countries like China , France and Australia are opening their doors to disgruntled American scientists. Not only will there be a loss of prestige for the USA, but an economic loss as well, including the industries that support research and the practical health benefits such as the development of monoclonal antibodies.
Yes, basic research is slow and expensive but in the long run the benefits are well worth the risks. So , soon it will be bye-bye Nobel Prize unless politicians wake up and see what is happening.
