Edward Dunphy, a 79-year-old man from Turners Falls, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to three years in prison and five years of supervised release for possessing over 340,000 files of child sexual abuse material. SPRINGFIELD — A 79-year-old Turners Falls man was sentenced in federal court on Wednesday to three years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, for possessing 340,000 files of child sexual abuse material.
Edward Dunphy, a resident of Second Street, was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2023 and pleaded guilty in April of this year to possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts. Dunphy was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni in Springfield.
An affidavit filed in court by a U.S. Secret Service agent explained the U.S. Secret Service Boston Digital Forensics Lab conducted an online investigation, in which agents began monitoring an account that was downloading files investigators knew to be associated with child pornography. A subpoena was then issued to Comcast, which delivered records tracing the IP address to Dunphy’s apartment.
When a search warrant was executed on May 18, 2023, Dunphy answered the door and investigators located a desktop computer with an internal hard drive, eight external hard drives, a cellphone and other items containing more than 340,000 files with child pornography. Prosecutors said the files contained depictions of “the sexual abuse or exploitation of an infant or toddler” and “the forcible rape of minor females.”
The charge of possession of child pornography carries the potential for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a minimum of five years and up to life of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. sentencing guidelines and statutes that govern the determination of a sentence in a criminal case.
