I would like to thank Louise Amyot for her July 2 letter in which she explained the effects of Gish galloping in a debate situation [“Overwhelmed by garbage”]. I am grateful that she called this to the attention of all who are harshly criticizing President Joe Biden’s performance during the debate. While it is undeniable that President Biden’s debate presence was less than stellar, I think the news media and much of the public ignored something much more vital, the fact that Donald Trump spewed forth lies, hate talk, and racist comments. I read much in the media and on social media about how President Biden should withdraw from the race, based upon 90 minutes at the end of a long day of the most grueling job on the planet. I have not seen even the hint that Donald Trump should withdraw, despite the fact that he is a convicted felon, a serial liar, and one who seeks to pit us against each other. Once again it seems that the news media are giving Donald Trump the attention that he craves.

I know that Trump supporters are rolling their eyes right now, but I have long ago given up thinking that they will listen to facts or reason. They probably feel the same about those of us who support President Biden. But, to those of you who are still sitting on the fence because “all politicians are the same” or because you really are not interested in politics, I urge you to sit up and take note of exactly what Donald Trump’s vision for this country is. Take him at his word. He is a vengeful would-be dictator who would prosecute his political opponents, lower taxes for the rich, and eliminate safeguards that protect our workers and our environment. Please pay attention to the difference between the two candidates. Instead of being impressed with how artfully Donald Trump can spew his lies, consider the real accomplishments of President Biden. And, for the sake of us all, make an informed choice and vote this November.
