Amherst College professor giving talk on soundscapes

GREENFIELD — Jeffers Engelhardt, a professor in Amherst College’s Music Department, will give a talk titled “Soundscapes of the Connecticut River Valley” at the John Zon Community Center, 35 Pleasant St., on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Engelhardt’s talk will draw on the archives of his unique Amherst College class in which students experience the challenges and joys of musical and sonic ethnography. The archive has 39 film and sound documentaries produced by his students since 2009. Engelhardt hopes to start a conversation with a local audience about its familiarity with some of these sounds and its encounters with new sonic communities in our region.
