I come from a tribe of farmers in southern Québec, and find western Mass. farmers filled with generosity and ingenuity similar to the kinds I grew up with. When I saw Everett Hatch’s obituary in the Recorder [Aug. 31], I fondly recalled the day about 20 years ago when Mr. Hatch showed up with a tractor to expand the Pleasant Street Community Garden, which I coordinated for many years.

Mr. Hatch did so out of the goodness of his heart. A few years earlier, legendary Colrain farmer Rich Pascale of Shoestring Farm tilled our very first plots, walking nonstop for hours in the scorching sun behind a Gravely tiller, also out of the goodness of his heart. Let’s hear it for our local farmers, and support them in any ways we can. Everett Hatch was a gem and will not be forgotten.
