I respect columnist H. Patricia Hynes and am usually in agreement with her points of view. But, I’m afraid that her recent column “Negotiate for peace in Ukraine” [Recorder, July 3] seems somewhat naive. Of course peace is preferable to war.
Mr. Bill Coli’s letter to the editor seems to summarize the problem of negotiation at any price [“Negotiating peace in Ukraine war not so simple,” Recorder, July 8]. Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s negotiation at Munich with Hitler did not bring us “peace in our time..
The situation with Russia and Ukraine is not comparable with “an eye for an eye” scenario but rather Ukraine trying to save its eyesight while a much bigger bully is trying to blind it.
Regrettably, sometimes war appears to be inevitable.
