Qualifying for the 2023 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield wrapped up on Wednesday, with the top two finishers advancing to the Championship Proper Aug. 14-20 in Colorado while the third and fourth place finishers will serve as alternates. 

Conway’s Gunnar Moore continued his busy summer on the links, competing in the event and posting a 3-over-par 75 in his first round on Wednesday and followed that with another 75 in the second and final round to finish the tournament 6-over, which put him a tie for 40th.

Kingston’s Herbie Aikens (10-under) was the overall winner while Robbie Keyes of Louisville, Ky., John Broderick of Wellesley and Jared Nelson of Rutland, Vt. finished tied for second with scores of 9-under. Keyes won the playoff to earn the automatic spot in the U.S. Amateur Championship. 

Moore’s summer still has plenty of meat on the bones, as he qualified and will compete in the Mass. Amateur next month in Essex (July 10-14).

Basketball

Franklin Tech Summer League

Maggie Porter led the way with seven points while Cassidy Fyden added six points and Juliana Eichenlaub scored four points as Hopkins picked up a 21-7 victory over Mohawk Trail on Tuesday in the Franklin Tech Girls Summer Basketball League. 

Valerie Bzomowski scored five points and Maddie Finn finished with two points for the Warriors. 

In the second game of the night Alivia Patch dropped in 14 points, Nevaeh Scribner recorded 12 points, Dakota Cleveland and Taylor Paluk each had five points and Hayden Comeau tallied four points as Mahar topped Greenfield, 40-36. Amber Bergeron had a game-high 23 points, Tayler Bergeron scored seven points and Ever Kennedy and Gloria McDonald each had three points for the Green Wave. 

The third game of the night between Franklin Tech and Pioneer came down to the final seconds, with Lilianna Inman putting in a layup in the closing seconds to lift the Eagles to a 44-43 victory. Lea Chapman finished with seven points, Kait Trudeau and Kyra Goodell each had five points while Cordelia Guerin and Haleigh Benoit both had four points for Tech. 

Leah Potter poured in 17 points, Kyler McClelland finished with 15 points, Hailey Ring scored six points and Addison Harrington had five points for the Panthers. 

In the final game on Tuesday Frontier secured a 41-15 win over Athol behind 10 points for Hailey Hutkowski, five points from both Claire Kirkendall and Jazzy Hayes, four points from Whitney Campbell and three points from both Ashley Taylor and Skyler Steele. 

Jenna Bonenfant finished with nine points, Olivia Horrigan scored three points, Ava Dams had two points and Anna Duquette sank a free throw for the Bears. 

DRIVE League

Caleb Murray dropped 15 points while Jon Breor and Grayson Thomas each tossed in 12 points as Greenfield walked away with a 62-39 win over Hatfield on Tuesday in boys varsity action in the DRIVE League at Greenfield High School. 

Greg Stone scored 13 points and Garrett Willard added 12 points for Hatfield. 

Vincent Carr’s 11 points helped lead Hampshire to a 67-27 win over Narragansett on Tuesday. Max Truman had nine points in the loss. 

Also on Tuesday Angel Castillo finished with 14 points and Ben Kearney put in 10 points to lift Athol to a 58-40 victory over Smith Vocational. Mike Chinappa led the Vikings with 14 points.
