LEYDEN — Selectboard members plan to solicit town employees’ perspectives as they map out a way to improve security at the Town Offices.
Member Glenn Caffery noted some discussion of this topic is suitable for executive session, but it is within the Selectboard’s purview to provide a safe working environment.
“There are a lot of people who work here all by themselves late at night,” he mentioned at this week’s Selectboard meeting. “So security has been an issue, and there are ways in which people maintain minimum standards for feeling safe enough, but I think we can probably do a whole lot better than that.”
Municipal Assistant Michele Giarusso said the town’s Building Needs Study Committee will soon bring in various contractors to conduct an assessment of 7 Brattleboro Road, where various municipal offices are housed.
Caffery said he wants to gather input from town employees who work in the building, calling it “an easy immediate first step.”
Giarusso noted Police Chief James Palmeri suggests installing surveillance cameras inside and outside the building. When a meeting attendee brought up lightning, Giarusso said there is an outdoor flood light and she will ask if someone can turn it toward the parking lot. She also said there are plans for an electric vehicle charging station in the lot and she has considered asking Eversource to install another light outside.
