GREENFIELD — A Greenfield resident was taken to the hospital for evaluation Sunday night after seemingly speeding through a stop sign when driving on Maple Street and careening off the roadway, according to Greenfield Police Sgt. David Rice.

The accident was reported shortly before 10 p.m., Rice said. The Greenfield man, estimated by Rice to be in his early 20s, had attempted to turn right onto Mountain Road, but could not complete the turn due to his vehicle’s excessive speed, Rice summarized. This, he continued, caused the driver to crash his car into the wooded bank to the left side of the road.

“How it didn’t roll, I’m amazed,” Rice said.

The vehicle, a white Kia Rio, had its airbags deploy as a result of the crash. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle on his own before first responders arrived, Rice said. South County EMS transported the driver to Baystate Franklin Medical Center with unknown injuries. The Greenfield Fire Department also responded.

Rice said police would wait for the driver to be evaluated at the hospital before investigating whether drug or alcohol use influenced the crash. While he was unsure to what extent the driver would face charges, Rice confirmed he would at least be cited for speeding.

“There’s definitely speed involved,” Rice said. “That definitely would be the primary factor.”
