TURNERS FALLS — Armed with a pair of lopping shears, Turners Falls resident Charlene Arsenault recently took it upon herself to clean up the tangled vines and thorns that enveloped a mulberry tree in Unity Park.

Having seen a young child go into the mess of vines and thorns, Arsenault said she was worried for the youngster’s safety. Working over a period of days, she trimmed back the bittersweet that had climbed high into the tree. With the help of a friend with a chainsaw, she also trimmed back the lower limbs.

A representative from FirstLight Hydro Generating Co., which owns the riverfront there, told Arsenault to leave the brush pile and they would remove it for her.
