ASHFIELD — While investigation continues, police have identified the victim in Saturday’s fatal crash on Route 116 in Ashfield as Rebecca Whitehead, 53, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
She was killed in a two-car collision at the intersection of Pleasant Street and Route 116, which occurred at around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. Whitehead was pronounced dead at the scene at roughly 6:10 p.m.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 22-year-old man from East Longmeadow, was transported by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, according to the DA’s office. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Whitehead was driving a Toyota RAV4 and the East Longmeadow man was driving a Chevrolet Silverado.
State Police troopers assigned to the Shelburne Falls barracks, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene, as did first responders from Plainfield and Ashfield.
Laurie Loisel, spokesperson with the DA’s office, said the investigation is ongoing. She was unable to confirm whether criminal charges will result from the incident.
