ASHFIELD — A 53-year old North Carolina woman driving a Toyota RAV4 was killed in a two-vehicle collision on Route 116 in Ashfield at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Pleasant Street and Route 116, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office reported. The driver of the other vehicle, a 22-year-old man in a Chevrolet Silverado, was transported by ambulance to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The North Carolina woman, whom authorities did not immediately identify, was pronounced dead at the scene at roughly 6:10 p.m., according to the DA’s office. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

State Police troopers assigned to the Shelburne Falls barracks, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Detective Unit assigned to the DA’s Office responded to the scene, as did first responders from Plainfield and Ashfield.

Laurie Loisel, spokesperson with the DA’s office, said the investigation is ongoing. She was unable to confirm whether criminal charges will result from the incident.

Just hours later at 8:11 p.m. in Florida, a 44-year-old man from Florida died in a motorcycle crash on River Road.

The man was operating a 2007 Harley Davidson, and the reason he lost control is under investigation, according to Massachusetts State Police. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The man was transported to Berkshire Medical Center in North Adams where he succumbed to his injuries, according to State Police.

The crash remains under investigation with assistance from State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and Berkshire County State Police Detective Unit. Florida Fire and Northern Berkshire EMS assisted.
