GREENFIELD — A Leominster man sustained “serious and life-threatening” injuries after the motorcycle he was riding collided with two vehicles along Route 2 on Saturday, according to acting Police Chief William Gordon.
Dispatchers received the call at around noon, he said. Gordon recounted that John Allen Vassar, 25, was traveling west on his 2022 Kawasaki motorcycle along Route 2 when he collided with a 2007 Jeep coming out of the Big Y plaza. He also subsequently struck a 2018 Toyota traveling east.
Vassar was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for his injuries. As of Monday afternoon, he was in “critical condition,” according to Keith O’Connor, senior public affairs specialist with Baystate Health.
Emergency responders at the crash scene included the Greenfield Police Department, Greenfield Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police, who assisted with crash reconstruction and directing traffic.
“Several bystanders aided in emergency medical treatment, quite possibly saving the motorcyclist’s life,” Gordon added.
The Jeep’s driver, Bernardston resident Tara Stone, 43, and the Toyota’s driver, Buckland resident Shirley MacClean, 54, sustained no reported injuries.
Vassar motorcycle was deemed as totaled and was towed by Koch’s Automotive, while the other vehicles sustained “moderate damage,” according to Gordon.
Vassar was cited for the incident and will be charged with “several motor vehicle infractions,” Gordon said. The incident remains under investigation by Greenfield Police Detective Joshua Lemay.
