GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Public Library, which has been closed since Friday due to air conditioning issues, will remain closed until at least Thursday.

“Last Friday morning, the air conditioning system failed, and George VanDelinder, who is the city’s central maintenance manager … suspected the issue was with the compressor,” explained Library Director Ellen Boyer. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor “confirmed it was a failed compressor unit.”

Boyer said a replacement compressor has been ordered and will arrive Tuesday.

“It’s scheduled to be installed Wednesday,” she said. “We will keep our fingers crossed that once the system is installed, everything will go as it should be and we’ll be able to open on Thursday.”

Although it’s unclear where in the city’s budget the repair expense will come from, a broken air conditioner requires attention, she said.

“You can’t run a public library without air conditioning,” she said. “I’ll have to work with the city, the mayor, to find where the funding will come from.”

The library is one of the city’s cooling centers. Other options in Greenfield include the John Zon Community Center at 35 Pleasant St. and the Elm Terrace Community Room at 1 Elm Terrace.

Splash pad closed

Another local spot for staying cool on hot summer days will be closed until further notice, according to a post from the Recreation Department.

A post on the Recreation Department’s Facebook page states that “due to the extreme drought conditions,” the splash pad at Hillside Park will be temporarily closed, effective Monday, in an effort to conserve as much water as possible.”

The notice came from the Department of Public Works.
