Rich Heath set the score to beat on Wednesday, as his plus-9 point quota topped the field at the Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club’s Knights of Columbus League.
Kent McGahan was right behind at plus-8, followed by Mike Hickey in third place (plus-6).
Bob Bourbeau notched the low gross of the evening with a 2-under 33, while Rod Demers was closest to the pin on No. 7 (5-6) and Chris Sacco was closest at No. 9 (7-7). Chet Czernich continues to lead the league at plus-16, followed by Ed Sargent (plus-13) and Fran Togneri (plus-9).
Skins were won Wednesday by Rod Demers, Kent McGahan, Mike Hickey and Bob Bourbeau.
Matt’s Men’s League
Charlie Peters fired a low round of 37 to earn low gross honors at Tuesday’s Matt’s Men’s League at Thomas Memorial.
Bob White’s 30 was the low net. Closest to the pin winners were Barry Picard (No. 7, 12-1) and Jon Hall (No. 9, 11-6). Picard and Matt Betsold scored the most points of the week (6).
FC Tech Summer League
It was a thrilling night of basketball that saw both games come down to the wire during the semifinal contests of the Franklin Tech Girls Varsity Summer Basketball League on Tuesday.
Amber Bergeron tossed in a game-high 24 points and knocked down a free throw with 2.4 seconds showing on the clock to lift Greenfield to a 33-32 win over Franklin Tech in the first semifinal contest of the night.
Elderina Cecunjanin finished with seven points and Taylor Bergeron added two points in the victory. Lea Chapman tossed in 14 points for the Eagles, Hannah Gilbert scored six points, Kylee Gamache had four points, Kaitlin Trudeau and Haleigh Benoit had three points and Kyra Goodell had two points in the loss.
The second semifinal on Tuesday saw Frontier and Mahar go to overtime after Redhawk Kylie Laford sank a deep 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to tie the game, 38-38.
The momentum from the shot carried over into the extra period, with Frontier outscoring the Senators 13-2 to earn a spot in the finals with a 51-40 triumph.
Delaney Fifield led the Redhawks with 13 points. Laford had 11 points, Madison McKemmie and Hailey Hutkoski each put in nine points, Claire Kirkendall tossed in seven points and Kali Berthiaume had two points in the victory.
Kendrah Doane scored a game-high 17 points for Mahar. Nevaeh Scribner scored nine points, Alivia Patch dropped six points, Sophia Woods scored four points while Hayden Comeau and Astha Bernard each recorded two points in the loss.
Greenfield and Frontier will square off in the title game on Thursday, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at Franklin Tech.
41st Montague Mug Race
The 41st annual Montague Mug Race will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Village Common.
The 5.5-mile road race “blasts” off at 8:30 a.m. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male/female finishers and coffee mugs to top finishers of each division. T-shirts will be given to the first 60 runners.
Now in its 16th year, the Mini Mug race/walk will kick off at 8:35 a.m.. This course is two miles and is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.
The course is well marked with plenty of water stops and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River. Runners may register by using runreg.com.
