Dump stickers, trash bags available

HAWLEY — Dump stickers for residents’ vehicles can now be purchased from Fire Chief Greg Cox, or from acting Administrative Assistant Tinky Weisblat in the Town Office on Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment.

The stickers are $40 for one or $41 for two. Trash bags can also be purchased at a rate of $10 for 10 bags, according to a Hawley town newsletter.

Recycling and compost bins can also be picked up at the Town Office on a first-come, first-served basis.

Updated MVP plan posted online

HAWLEY — The town’s Hazard Mitigation Plan/Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Plan has been posted to the Hawley website.

These plans focus on both hazard mitigation and climate adaptation, and satisfy the regulatory requirements through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) grant program.

Colrain student named to Castleton Dean’s List

COLRAIN — Sarah Herzig of Colrain was named to the Dean’s List at Castleton University in Vermont for the spring semester.

She previously attended Mohawk Trail Regional School, and is the daughter of Ken Herzig and Rita Thibodeau.

Traprock board members to hold library reading

SHELBURNE FALLS — The Arms Library will host a reading with authors Sarah Pirtle and Pat Hynes on Friday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. under the tent behind the building.

Pirtle will read her revised edition of “An Outbreak of Peace” and Hynes will read her book, “Hope, But Demand Justice.” They are longtime members of the Traprock Center for Peace and Justice board who share insights grounded in hope.

‘Kites & Things That Fly’ event coming to Arms Library

SHELBURNE FALLS — The Arms Library will host a “Kites & Things That Fly” event with Bill Strader, librarian and educator, on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m.

“We will see a wide variety of kites, assemble some … and even make your own Scottish sled kite,” Strader explained.

Buckland Historical Society plans for open house

BUCKLAND — The Buckland Historical Society is planning an open house on Sunday, July 24, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Those interested can visit the Buckland Historical Society Museum — a former schoolhouse that now houses three floors of artifacts and town records — located at 20 Upper St. Also open is the Wilder Homestead — a furnished 1775 saltbox with five fireplaces, a 1779 English barn with antique barn loom, and a shoemaker shop — located at 129 Route 112.
