Brody Hicks tossed four innings on the mound and added a double at the plate, and Kolin Broderick smacked three hits to power second-seeded Davenport’s Mobil West County Warriors to a 16-1 win over Northampton in the opening round of a PVYBL Sandy Koufax double-elimination playoff game on Tuesday in Buckland.
Gage Gutierrez had two hits in the victory for West County. Top-seeded West County Pettengill Archery had a bye in Tuesday’s opening round. Both teams will play at home at Mohawk Trail Regional on Wednesday.
Mickey Mantle
Eathon Bryant tossed four innings with two strikeouts as the Hilltown Hardwood Flooring West County Warriors swept a pair against South Hadley in PVYBL Mickey Mantle action on Tuesday in Buckland.
Bryant earned the win in a 7-5 victory in Game 1, which capped a suspended game from earlier this season. Cayden Payne was 2-for-4 with a double while Charlie May (2-for-3, 2B), Wyatt Edes (two hits), Marshall Ingram (hit) and Bryant (hit) all aided the offense.
In Game 2, Edes tossed a gem, striking out nine in six innings to help West County to a 6-1 victory.
Jack Ganzar struck out one in an inning of relief and added a hit at the plate, while Payne was 3-for-3 with a double. Bryant and Jesse Dubreuil each added two hits and Ingram also had a hit.
Frontier 6, Springfield 5 – Host Frontier scored two runs in the seventh inning to force extra innings, and walked off with a run in the bottom of the eighth to snag a 6-5 win over Springfield on Tuesday.
Jake Paasch got the win in relief, striking out four in two scoreless innings for Frontier. Tegan Dexter and Dylan Camp combined for nine strikeouts in five innings.
Offensively, Paasch and Collin West had two hits and an RBI apiece. Max Skribiski-Banack and Dexter also had a hit and an RBI for Frontier.
Tri-County League
Chicopee Tigers 2, Teddy Bear Pools 0 – Zac Brittain pitched well in a loss for Teddy Bear Pools, which was held to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Tigers on Tuesday at Szot Park in Chicopee.
Brittain allowed seven hits and one earned run over six innings while walking one and striking out five for the Poolmen, which fell to 8-10 overall.
Bryan Baumann (Frontier), Brandon Zaikowski (Northampton) and Hector DeJesus each had a hit for Teddy Bear Pools, which closes out its regular season on Thursday against Chicopee before postseason play begins July 25.
F.C. Babe Ruth
Jake Knight knocked a double and two singles in TFAC’s 8-2 loss to Brattleboro on Monday in a Franklin County Babe Ruth League contest at Abercrombie Field.
Rylin Koscinski, Malik Moore, Landon Thompson and John Richardson all hit safely in the loss. Moore and Koscinski pitched for TFAC.
Greenfield Co-ed League
Colton Yezieski (double) and Maura Crossman had two hits apiece, and JRB Disposal edged the Liberty Tax Sharks, 4-1, in a Greenfield Adult Co-ed Softball League contest on Tuesday.
Bob Badillo had two hits, including a double, for the Liberty Tax Sharks, while Dom Carme also had two hits and drove in a run.
Elsewhere, Brian Ginnity was 2-for-2 with a home run and five RBIs, and Tom Crossman also clubbed a home run with three RBIs to help Tavern of South Deerfield past Business & Pleasure, 14-5, at Green River Field.
Stefanie Williams registered three hits for Tavern, which also received offensive contributions from Stephanie Scott (two hits, two RBIs) and Adam Williams (two hits, 2B).
Business and Pleasure’s Topher Gordon had three hits, and both Josh Lashaway and Rylie Stafford finished with two hits.
Franklin Tech Summer League
Kaitlin Trudeau led all scorers with 17 points, as Franklin Tech edged Mahar, 34-31, in double overtime to highlight Tuesday action at the Franklin Tech Girls Summer League on Tuesday in Turners Falls.
Lea Chapman added nine points in the win for Tech. Mahar’s Kendrah Doane scored 14 points while Hayden Comeau added seven.
In other action, Frontier defeated Smith Academy, 46-34, with Hailey Hutkoski leading the way with a game-high 18 points. Claire Kirkendall chipped in with 14 points in the victory.
Smith Academy’s Cori Scagel led her side with 14, while Piper Higuera had and Caitlin Graves each had six.
Elsewhere, Pioneer defeated Athol 42-11 with Addison Harrington (17 points) and Hailey Ring (15) both scoring in double figures.
Athol’s Emma Bacigalupo scored seven points and Lizzy Mailloux added two points.
DRIVE League
Connor Sluder dropped 17 points to lead Mahar past Hadley, 58-34, in a boys varsity contest of the DRIVE League at Greenfield High School on Monday.
James Fitzgibbons and Teddy Cyr each scored nine points in the loss.
In other action, James McNally’s 22 points lifted Northampton past Hinsdale, 74-33. Brayden Eastman led Hinsdale with 16 points.
Also on Monday, Jon Breor went off for 40 points while Jacob Blanchard added 12 points in Greenfield’s 71-53 win over Easthampton. Samir Hanafi had 19 points in the loss.
Niedbala notches hole-in-one
The first hole-in-one of the 2022 season at Thomas Memorial Gol f & Country Club took place on Saturday.
Joe Niedbala knocked an ace on hole No. 7 from 132 yards out, using a 7-iron to accomplish the feat. It was his first career hole-in-one. The shot was witnessed by Darren Lenois, Charlie Peters and Rodney Herzig.
Edge Hill Men’s League
Mark Eaton, Brett Sallee and Lewis Goodnow all posted plus-1 point quotas for top honors in the A Division at Tuesday’s Edge Hill Men’s League.
Eaton shot 39 to take low gross honors and Junior Rivera had the low net at 34.
Paul Champigny’s plus-4 quota topped the B Division, and Jon Sonntag was next at plus-2. Champigny shot 43 to take the low gross and Sonntag tied with Craig Rice for low net (35).
Rice was closest to the pin on No. 8 (22-9).
CCG results
Ann McHugh and Janet Small tallied the low gross of 83 in a Best Ball of Partners Blind Draw contest a t the Country Club of Greenfield on Tuesday.
Gail Miller and Jane Smith tied with Terry Boyce and Dianne Wood for second after both pairings tallied an 85.
Anne Echeverria and Irene McDonald shot the low net of 69, followed by Lane Kelly and Blind Draw with a net-75 and Donna Mowry and Donna Woodcock with a net-77.
