Read this morning about the “narrow, curvy and dangerous” Route 8A going through Hawley. This is a beautiful road. This description and anybody who writes it as such is nothing more than a highway department ruse, suddenly blaming trees and curves as an excuse to bring out the heavy equipment and tar truck. Mostly it is New Hampshire that ruins byways like this. But Massachusetts gradually falls under. Highway departments everywhere want nothing more than to widen and straighten roads and put in breakdown lanes as wide as a travel lane. Big time surprised that the town of Hawley would let this happen. Hugely disappointed that nobody can stand up to the highway department, main job of which is to keep on laying down tar and keeping as many people employed as possible (re” The Peter Principle). Shame on the town of Hawley.
