SHELBURNE FALLS — Ricardo Frota will offer a free performance behind the Arms Library on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Frota will play multi-cultural songs of Indigenous people from Africa, South America, North America and Brazil. He uses traditional instruments, and instruments made of recycled materials and objects found in nature.
Masks are not required. There will be chairs set up, but people are encouraged to bring their own seating.
SHELBURNE — Jim Perry, avid hiker and member of the Shelburne Open Space Committee, will lead a hike on Saturday, along the Mohican-Mohawk Trail, a Franklin Land Trust trail. Attendees are advised to meet at the Arms Library at 9 a.m.
The hike is a 1.5-mile trail in a tree and plant nursery. There will be an overlook view of the Deerfield River. Attendees are advised to bring water and snacks, wear sneakers or hiking shoes, and wear insect repellant.
BUCKLAND — The Wilder Homestead on Ashfield Road (Route 112) is open to tour on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.
The barn will have a weaving demonstration done on an antique barn loom. It will show how a rag rug was made in the 18th century.
SHELBURNE — The Cultural Council will change to offering direct funding this fall. Grants will now be awarded upfront, instead of after projects are finished.
“We are pleased about this important improvement in accessibility to our grants,” the Cultural Council wrote in a press release.
Previously, grant recipients were required to fund their projects and upon completion, collect reimbursement for their expenses. The Massachusetts Cultural Council is encouraging local cultural councils to switch to direct funding to transfer money to grant recipients as quickly as possible and thereby help them launch their projects. The council believes this funding method ensures an equitable playing field for all artists and organizations, regardless of economic status.
ASHFIELD — The First Congregational Church of Ashfield will have the concluding concert of its Organ Celebration Series at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, at the church, 429 Main St. Bob Sparkman, Jerry Noble, Kara Noble and Tinky Weisblat will perform.
This concert is the last in a series celebrating the restoration of the organ. Work took place from 2018 to 2020. A 2017 capital campaign “Make a Joyful Noise,” raised the necessary funds for restoration.
Admission is free. Masks may be required inside the sanctuary.
SHELBURNE — Town Clerk Joe Judd reports that in the 2022 town election, there was one additional vote added to the final tally count.
The voter in question was placed on record as having been given a provisional ballot. Upon reconciling the election, it was found that the voter who was given a provisional ballot was actually a registered voter whose name appeared on the check-in list, but was unintentionally missed during the check-in process, according to Judd. The final vote count for the 2022 town election is now 145 instead of 144.
Each person whose name appeared on the ballot received one additional vote to their final tally, according to Judd. John Wheeler, a write-in candidate for Planning Board, also received one extra vote.
CHARLEMONT — Overwatch Outpost Outfitters will host a Massachusetts license to carry class on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 5 to 9:30 p.m.
Participants will get the certificate required to apply for a license to carry, according to an Overwatch Outpost Outfitters newsletter.
