Noah deRuiter blitzed the course at the Northfield Summer Road Race Series on Thursday, taking first place with a time of 20 minutes, 46 seconds.
He was followed by Tellman Knudson (23:38), Lex Singh (23:46), Matt Bassett (23:52) and David Thomas (24:09). Brenda Fionte (29:14) was the first female finisher, placing 17th overall. Twenty runners and 15 walkers participated.
The Northfield race takes place every Thursday during the summer months. It starts and ends at 105 Main Street in Northfield. Cost is $4/person; $10 max per family.
Mickey Mantle
Four pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters, lifting the West County Warriors, sponsored by Hilltown Hardwood Flooring to a 4-2 victory over Frontier in a PVYBL Mickey Mantle contest on Thursday in Buckland.
Wyatt Edes and Charles May combined for 11 of the 13 punchouts, and May earned the win in relief. Ty Griswold picked up the save for the Warriors.
Frontier’s Owen Babb struck out nine in a solid complete-game outing, scattering just four hits and one earned run.
West County trailed 2-1 in the sixth inning before rallying with a three-spot in the home half. May had two hits and an RBI, and Jesse Dubreuil added a hit and an RBI.
Frontier’s Max Skibiski-Banack doubled and Philip Morin had a hit and an RBI.
Junior Legion
Trevor Kuchieski smacked three hits, while Hugh Cyhowski, Johnny Marchefka and Dylen Richardson had two hits apiece to power Greenfield Post 81 to a 12-0 win over West Springfield in American Legion Junior Division action on Wednesday.
Jake Petrin clubbed an RBI triple in the victory, while the trio of Jackson Campbell, Caleb Thomas and Kuchieski combined for a three-hitter on the mound.
Timmons-Messer
Brian Cocco and Dan Campbell won a match of cards over Scott Powers and Bill Noyes to finish with the low gross of 34 in the Timmons-Messer League on Wednesday.
Dave Brady and Bob LaCoy finished with the low net of 25, followed by Dan Grybko and Honker Zaikowski with a net 26. In closest to the pin Lloyd Grover won on No. 6 (14 feet, one inch) while Andy Sena won it on No. 7 (8-7). Sena was the match medalist with a 38, followed by Cocco with a 39.
PV Summer League
Chanmin Son tallied two goals while Tristan Valderrama also found the back of the net to lift Frontier to a 3-1 win over West Springfield B on Thursday at Frontier Regional School.
Fernando Saravia had an assist while David Pettinato and Ben Cachiguango played strong defense in the win.
F.C. Summer League
Maggie Fay struck out 17 to help lift the Defenders to a 14-13 victory over the Havoc on Wednesday in an Franklin County Summer Softball League contest at Murphy Park.
Shelby O’Leary, Maggie Fay and Gianna DiSciullo each had three hits, Amelia Pierce and Skylar Alamed each had two hits and Kat Martini hit safely in the win.
Grace Laurie struck out four before Cassie Dion came on to strike out eight for the Havoc. Laurie and Natalie Elson each had a pair of hits with Dion and Janelle Massey both contributing a hit in the loss.
Franklin Tech Summer League
Hailey Ring notched eight points and Fota Ndiaye and Lilianna Inman each scored six to help Pioneer get past Smith Academy, 32-12, in a Franklin Tech Girls Summer Basketball League contest Thursday in Turners Falls.
Addison Harrington scored five points in the win, while Leah Potter (3), Laura Kahler (2) and Haleigh Benoit (2) all contributed.
For Smith Academy, Caitlin Graves scored five points, Piper Higuera scored three points, Madison Zanoni scored two points, and Alexa Jagodzinski and Chelsea Ghareeb each scored one point.
Elsewhere, Franklin Tech defeated Athol 47-4 thanks to 21 points from Lea Chapman and 10 from Kyra Goodell. Other Tech scorers were Emma Little and Haleigh Benoit (4 points each), Laken Woodard and Kaitlin Trudeau (3 points each), and Jill Crowningshield and Haleigh Benoit (2 points each).
Jenna Bonenfant scored four points for Athol.
Finally, Frontier defeated Greenfield 47-38 behind 13 points from Kylie Laford and 12 from Claire Kirkendall. Madison McKemmie followed with seven points while Hailey Hutkowski (5), Molly Gates (4) and Jazzy Hayes (2) also tallied.
For Greenfield, Amber Bergeron and Azemina Cecujanin each scored 17 points, Josie Cloutier scored three points, and Cassie Cloutier scored one point.
