This letter is in reference to the June 15 article which appeared in the Recorder entitled “Police race bias judgment hits $1M.” We are writing to let you know we found the article as written to be very confusing. We have many questions about a possible appeals process.

1. Can the insurance company appeal without the client’s consent? 2. If the client tells the insurance company not to appeal, what happens? 3. Who is the client? The mayor representing the city of Greenfield? The city represented by the City Council? The city represented by the people who pay taxes?

We would find it very helpful if another Recorder article could be written to address these questions.

And Mayor RoxannWedergarten was quoted in this article as saying it’s the insurance company’s money and, “They’re looking to protect it, plus make sure the city of Greenfield gets a fair trial.” With all due respect, is the mayor implying that the trial — which lasted three weeks and for which the jury deliberated five days — and for which the presiding judge “signed off on an additional $567,000” was not a fair and just trial?

We can’t help but wonder whose interests are being considered here: the insurance company’s or the city’s.
