It was an intense finish to the 61st Mt. Washington Road Race on Sunday for Leverett’s Kim Nedeau.
The race was shortened from 7.8 miles to 3.8 miles due to extreme cold and wind on the mountain, and Nedeau saved her best for the final stretch. The 42-year-old was sitting in fourth place with 200 meters to go but turned on the jets to pass Caitlin Patterson of Portland, Maine, with Nedeau finishing in third place with a time of 35 minutes, 26 seconds.
Patterson finished the race in a time of 35:30. Colorado’s Kim Dobson won the race in a time of 31:59.
F.C. Summer League
Cordelia Guerin smashed a grand slam to help lead Menace to a 15-7 victory over Havoc on Monday in a season-opening Franklin County Summer Softball League contest at Murphy Park.
Bianca Reynolds had three hits including a double and three RBIs, Skyler Steele knocked three hits including a double and brought in two runs and Kylee Gamache had three hits and an RBI in the victory. Lindsey Taylor and Anna Bucala both cracked two hits for Menace.
Brooke Rochon had the lone hit for Havoc, knocking in a run with a double. Cassie Dion struck out 12 in the circle in the loss.
Valley Storm
Carly Blanchard knocked a triple to score the winning run to lead Valley Storm 16U to a 7-5 win over the New England Roadrunners on Sunday.
Cassie Dunham struck out 10 in the victory. Blanchard finished with three hits in the win while Lexi Lounder and Kaelyn Zakaitis had a pair of hits for Valley Storm.
Senior Legion
Greenfield Post 81 continued its blistering start to the season on Monday, pulling out a 3-1 win over Wilbraham Post 286 on the road to advance to 4-0 on the season.
TJ Thibeault got the win on the hill, going six innings and striking out seven. Jason Quinn got the save in the seventh.
David Carey knocked a pair of doubles, Tyler Dubreuil had a double and a single, Ben Martino had an RBI single, Jake Sak smashed an RBI double and MJ Paulin hit safely in the victory.
PVYBL Mickey Mantle
The Frontier and Ware Mantle squads played to a 3-3 tie on Sunday, with Owen Babb and Grayson Loos combining to allow just one hit for Frontier.
Loos had a pair of hits and an RBI at the plate while Sam Whitney knocked a double in the tie.
Greenfield Tennis Cup
The Greenfield Tennis Cup will be held on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The tournament takes place at the Beacon Courts. It is a singles tournament, with separate men’s and women’s divisions. The cost to enter is $10, with the number of games played being dependent on the number of players. The deadline to register is Friday at 6 p.m.
