The Franklin Tech softball team went on the road and pulled off an upset in the Western Mass. Class C tournament to earn a spot in the championship game.
The No. 3 Eagles made the trip to Williamstown on Thursday to take on No. 2 Mt. Greylock and came away with a 6-0 victory behind a total team performance.
“They showed a lot of character tonight,” Franklin Tech coach Joe Gamache said. “Our team chemistry is great. They’re a lot of fun to be around. We had a goal in mind of making it this far and we embraced the underdog role today and did some great things.”
The Eagles (18-2) will face Greenfield in the Class C finals at a date and time to be determined.
“We have nothing to lose now,” Gamache said. “Hopefully we continue to stick together, play good softball and compete.”
Franklin Tech got on the board in the top of the first inning and a big play by Kaitlin Trudeau nailed a Greylock runner out trying to reach home in the bottom half of the inning, keeping the Mounties from tying the game up.
The Eagles added three runs in the top of the second to take command of the game and tacked two more on the board in the top of the fifth on an error to take a 6-0 lead.
Lauren Ross got the win in the circle, allowing just four hits on the day.
“Lauren pitched great and hit her spots,” Gamache said. “Our defense behind her made some great plays. It was a total team effort.”
Lilly Ross finished the day with a single, a triple and an RBI for Tech. Lauren Ross helped herself with an RBI single, Trudeau had a hit and an RBI, Hannah Gilbert knocked a double while Cordelia Guerin, Kylee Gamache and Keira Stevens hit safely in the victory.
