GILL — A bus driver at Northfield Mount Hermon School was flown to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield on Tuesday after he was impaled by a metal gate.

The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. near the campus’s lower fields. According to NMH Chief Operating Officer Mary McEneany, who responded to the scene alongside emergency personnel, the situation was caused by a “fluke accident.”

McEneany said the school bus driver “took a blow to his left side underneath the armpit” after the unfastened barrier swung into the side of his bus, causing “minor” damage to the vehicle.

“It’s definitely wind-related,” she said.

Fortunately, McEneany added, the driver was “lucid” and “talking” after having sustained his injury.

There were no other occupants on the bus, she said.

American Medical Response, Northfield EMS, the Gill Police Department and the Gill Fire Department responded. A Life Star helicopter landed on the field at around 2:40 p.m. and flew the man to Springfield’s Baystate Medical Center.

The incident remains under investigation.
