UMass equity film series finale to be held in Turners Falls

TURNERS FALLS — The University of Massachusetts Amherst-based Western Massachusetts Health Equity Network is closing out its “MOSAIC” racism and community health film series on Wednesday, May 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a multimedia exhibit at the Shea Theater Arts Center, 71 Avenue A.

According to a UMass press release, a photo exhibit by the Sow Well Tots Early Childhood Program will be featured in the Shea’s lobby. The Bernardston-based, woman-led and nature-based school will combine “the research and practice of Afro-folk arts and deep respect for early childhood development” via photography from Greta Rybus. In addition, Nipmuc activist Andre Strongbearheart “will speak about humans’ multifaceted relationship with the Earth” and dance ceremonial choreography. Representatives of Montague Public Libraries will also be present to discuss how public libraries support community health.

The MOSAIC film to be shown was produced by Holyoke storyteller Michelle Falcón Fontánez, “who seeks to make social change through photography, film, theater and installation art,” according to the release. The film is in English with Spanish subtitles.

Montague Center Fire Department holding open house

MONTAGUE CENTER — The Montague Center Fire Department is holding an open house at the Fire Station, 28 Old Sunderland Road, on Saturday, May 21, from 7 a.m. to noon to promote fire safety.

A pancake, bacon and sausage breakfast will be offered to those who make a donation to the Fire Association until 10 a.m. Smokey Bear and members of the Fire Department will be present to share forest fire safety information. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as shooting a fire hose, exploring the Fire Station and viewing historical photos.

Collector, historian presenting folk art

GILL — Collector and design historian Peter Mars will host a presentation of 1940s- to 1960s-era folk art at Town Hall, second floor, on Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 3 p.m.

TURNERS FALLS — The Musica Franklin youth music program will hold a short student demonstration, followed by a family-friendly concert with veteran jazz and blues icon Samirah Evans, on Sunday, May 22, at 3 p.m. in the Great Falls Discovery Center’s Great Hall.

“Samirah is known for her dynamic and soulful approach to music, especially in the jazz and blues genres,” a statement from Musica Franklin reads. “Her musical style is heavily influenced by the New Orleans sound where she was one of the city’s most popular and in-demand singers for nearly 20 years.”

TURNERS FALLS — The Turners Falls Fishway at 15 First St. is open through June 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays. The Great Falls Discovery Center encourages visitors to observe the annual spring migration of fish.
