Bird photographer sharing work at Discovery Center

TURNERS FALLS — Bird photographer Peter Christoph will exhibit his work and explain his techniques during a presentation Thursday, April 21, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A.

The presentation will include talk about essential gear for photographing birds, important settings and features of a camera that are useful for wildlife photography, and storytelling strategies.

Water Pollution Control Facility holding Earth Day celebration

MONTAGUE — The Water Pollution Control Facility at 34 Greenfield Road will unveil its new mural and hand out goodie bags to elementary school-age children during the second annual Earth Day drive-thru facility tour Friday, April 22, from 1 to 2 p.m.

“I feel that it is extremely important for our department to be part of the community in order to help educate others on what wastewater treatment entails and how crucial it is to protect the environment and public health,” Superintendent Chelsey Little wrote in an email. “We are the first line of defense for our receiving waters, and we work hard making sure the facility operates in a way that both meets permit requirements and ultimately protects water as our most precious resource. We felt that Earth Day was the perfect day to bring recognition to that mission.”

DCR inviting volunteers for day of state park service

TURNERS FALLS — The state Department of Conservation and Recreation is inviting those interested in volunteering service to state parks to come to the Great Falls Discovery Center at 2 Avenue A on Saturday, April 23, from 10 p.m. to noon for a day of planting, mulching and pruning.

Community baseball league holding opening day parade

TURNERS FALLS — The Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League will hold a parade on Sunday, April 24, to celebrate its opening day.

The parade will leave Turners Falls High School at 11 a.m. before taking a left onto Turnpike Road, heading toward the Montague Public Safety Complex and taking a right onto Montague Street to the league’s fields at 27 Crocker Ave. Opening day ceremonies will follow at the fields before team photos are taken at noon and games kick off at 1 p.m.

This league is affiliated with the Cal Ripken Division of the Babe Ruth League Inc. The spring season runs from April through June.

Pair of firefighters receive promotions

TURNERS FALLS — The Turners Falls Fire Department has announced two promotions, effective April 17.

Capt. Todd Brunelle was promoted to deputy fire chief and firefighter Trisha Dana was promoted to captain.

According to a press release from Fire Chief Brian McCarthy, Brunelle joined the department as a member of the call force on Oct. 10, 1997, and was promoted to the permanent force on March 19, 2000. Brunelle then worked his way up the ranks before being promoted to captain on Jan. 1, 2012. He earned fire chief accreditation in Massachusetts and holds 25 national certifications in firefighting.

Dana began her fire service career with the Amherst Fire Department as a member of its call force from 1999 to 2002, according to the press release. She then joined the Turners Falls Fire Department as a member of the call force on April 28, 2002 and was promoted to the permanent force on July 1, 2011.
