SOUTH DEERFIELD — The South Deerfield Fire District and neighboring agencies quickly put out a fire at 97 North Main St. Friday morning.
The department responded just after 9 a.m. for a report of smoke in the basement. Upon arrival, first responders found fire and “heavy smoke,” and requested a first-alarm assignment, according to a post on the South Deerfield Fire District’s Facebook page.
Firefighters contained the fire from spreading further and opened both interior and exterior walls of the house to ensure “all hot spots were identified,” the post states.
The South Deerfield Fire District was assisted by the Deerfield Fire District, Whately, Bernardston, Sunderland and Turners Falls fire departments, the Deerfield Police Department and South County EMS.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the Facebook post.
