This morning (March 24) I read a horrific story in the paper regarding a man who set himself on fire. What kind of mental agony was he suffering to commit such an act? And this being just one tale of the many who require treatment for mental health in the Greenfield area. If Baystate Health wishes to build a mental health facility in Holyoke I think that’s fine. Western Massachusetts as a whole needs more psychiatric beds. However, they are doing us a great disservice by closing the mental health unit at Franklin Medical Center. We need to have easier access to treatment, which means local access that can provide immediate intervention. Baystate keep our mental health unit open!
