This tragic moment in Ukraine should motivate the United States to use its war production powers to rapidly increase solar and wind deployment — wind appropriate siting considerations that honor the value of mature forests. Let’s cover the millions of acres of industrial rooftops available to host large solar installations, and fast-track the reputable offshore wind projects that are stuck in red tape. We have long been held captive by foreign oil. The most powerful thing we can do right now is say no to Russian oil. We can reduce Putin’s power and become energy-independent while also avoiding disastrous climate impacts. The recent IPCC Adaptation report spells out the damage already facing many countries from long-term drought, extreme storms, sea and groundwater level rise, extensive wildfires. We need to rapidly decarbonize — for our sake, and for global political and environmental stability. Please contact our legislators and push for bold action.
