SHELBURNE — A collision involving a tractor trailer and car closed Route 2 at the intersection with Colrain Shelburne Road on Tuesday for roughly an hour and resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to one of the drivers.
According to Shelburne Police Chief Gregory Bardwell, the call came in at 12:37 p.m. He said several witnesses reported seeing the white Subaru Outback pull out from Colrain Shelburne Road onto Route 2 into the path of a westbound tanker truck, which struck the driver’s side of the Subaru, sending it spinning. The Subaru came to rest facing east in the westbound breakdown lane.
The driver of the Subaru, the vehicle’s only occupant, was trapped for almost an hour as firefighters from Greenfield and Shelburne used powered extraction tools to open the driver’s side door. Meanwhile, EMTs administered first aid from the passenger’s side.
Bardwell said the driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg. A LifeStar medical helicopter was called and landed on the nearby Goodnow’s Chip and Putt golf course. AMR ambulance transported the victim to the waiting helicopter.
According to the Shelburne Fire Department’s Facebook page, the man was airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
State Police were on scene to detour traffic around the accident via Colrain Shelburne Road to Skinner Road to Frank Williams Road, avoiding any back-up on Route 2 during the closure. The empty tanker truck suffered front-end damage and was towed.
