Many years ago in the 1930s and ’40s, many families did not have refrigerators or freezers. My parents were one of those families.
To keep food from spoiling, blocks of ice were delivered and put into the older ice boxes. Greenfield Ice and Trucking Co. located on Overland Road off of Bernardston Road was one that delivered it. There was a pond nearby where the ice was taken from.
A container was at the bottom of the icebox to catch the water and had to be emptied quite often. My parents had theirs on the porch until a used refrigerator was bought by them. The kitchen was too small for it so it went in the dining room. They never had a freezer to store frozen foods.
This is another memory I wish to share with all of you.
