BUCKLAND — An elderly woman in her 80s was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield following a rollover accident Friday afternoon.
At around 1 p.m., the Hawley Fire Department, Shelburne Falls Ambulance and Massachusetts State Police responded to 62 Labelle Road after the woman drove off the road and struck a stone wall, causing her vehicle to flip. According to Hawley Fire Chief Greg Cox, the woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Baystate Franklin.
Cox said Labelle Road is very narrow and his department responded because the 911 call reported the accident had happened in Hawley. His crew realized it was actually in Buckland when they arrived on scene.
“It’s very narrow, basically a one-lane road through there, with a streambed on the side. She struck a stone wall by the driveway,” Cox said. “We responded with a pumper because we kept expecting it to appear in Hawley.”
Cox said the State Police trooper who arrived on scene first helped put out a fire that had started before the Fire Department had even arrived. He added the scene was cleared in under an hour
“It started to smoke,” Cox said, “and the trooper put out a fire in the engine compartment.”
