A fantastic run in the Massachusetts Chairman’s Cup Championship came to an end for Greenfield Post 81 Tuesday night.
After winning their first two games of the double-elimination state tourney, Post 81 dropped back-to-back tilts at Natick’s Mahan Field on Tuesday. Peabody eliminated Greenfield with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Jason Quinn pitched a gem in the loss to Peabody, as he allowed just three hits in a complete-game effort on the bump. Peabody scored its lone two runs in the third inning, using a solo home run and later, an RBI double, to take a 2-0 lead.
“Jason tossed an excellent, excellent game,” Post 81 coach Kevin Luippold lauded.
Those two runs were all Quinn relinquished, and Greenfield rallied with a run in the sixth inning when Kyle Barnes doubled and scored on a Shawn Davenport RBI single.
In the seventh, Kevin Baumann roped a double with one out, but Post 81 was unable to get him around for the tying run. Greenfield was one of the final four squads remaining in the eight-team field.
The day opened with an 13-4 loss to powerhouse Franklin, as Post 81 mustered eight hits but couldn’t overcome a tenacious Franklin side.
Trailing 2-0 in the second, Greenfield took the lead thanks to a string of hits. Jason Quinn and Baumann singled, and MJ Paulin, Jake Sak and Barnes all came through with RBI hits to make it a 3-2 game.
Franklin took control back in the third with a pair of runs, and eventually put things out of reach with a five-run top of the seventh.
Davenport and Cam Lococo combined to handle the pitching duties, while Lococo had a hit and Jacob Quinn also doubled.
FC Summer League
Sisters Lauren and Lilly Ross combined for 11 strikeouts in the pitching circle, helping the Magic score a 7-4 win over the Bombers in a Franklin County Summer League playoff game Tuesday night at Murphy Park.
Kendra Campbell tripled and drove in two runs for the Magic, which received a double from Lauren Ross and strong defensive work from Taylor Barry.
The Bombers were led by Ivy Rae, who struck out eight in the circle and added a single. Emily Eastman keyed the defensive effort.
CCG 18 Hole Women’s
Susan O’Connor shot 85 to secure the low overall gross in Tuesday’s Country Club of Greenfield 18-hole Women’s League.
Michele Hazlett and Sue Sigda tied for low gross in Flight 2 with rounds of 94. Janet Small had the low net in Flight 1 (67), while Irene Woods had the low net in Flight 2 (67).
On the front nine, O’Connor’s 40 led the way in the Flight 1, with Sue Sigda scoring low gross in Flight 2 (46). Small had the low net in Flight 1 (32) and Anne Corrinet had the low net in Flight 2 (32).
On the back nine, Teresa Varner’s 44 was low in Flight 1, and Woods’ 47 was the low score in Flight 2. O’Connor’s 34 was the low net and Hazlett was the low net in Flight 2 (34).
Edge Hill Men’s League
Junior Rivera’s plus-4 point quota was one better than Lewis Goodnow at plus-3, topping the A Division at Tuesday’s Edge Hill Men’s League.
Rivera’s 31 was low net, followed by Wayne Clark. Closest to the pin was Brett Sallee (9-2) on No. 16 while Goodnow scored the low gross (38).
In the B Division, John Walsh’s plus-8 quota was tops, as he shot 42. Greg Thompson nabbed the low net with a 32.
F.C. Babe Ruth
Franklin County Babe Ruth League baseball will hold registrations for their Fall Ball program beginning this weekend.
The league is holding registrations on Saturday (10-11:30 a.m.) and Sunday (noon-1:30 p.m.), as well as Tuesday, Aug. 17 (5:30-7 p.m.) and Thursday, Aug. 19 (5:30-7 p.m.). All registrations will be held at Abercrombie Field in East Greenfield.
Players ages 12 and 13, as well as those turning 14 after Aug. 15 are eligible to play. It’s an excellent introduction to a full-sized diamond.
