UMass grad Heather MacLean placed 12th in the second Olympic women’s 1,500-meter run semifinal Wednesday, completing the nearly four laps around the track in 4 minutes, 5.33 seconds.

That mark did not qualify her for the final. The top five finishers in each of the two semifinals made it automatically plus the next two fastest from either heat.

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won the second semifinal at 4:00.23. Both time qualifiers emerged from the first heat: Vermont native Ellie Purrier St. Pierre (4:01.00) and Kristiina Mäki of the Czech Republic (4:01.23).

The final will take place at 8:50 a.m. Friday in Tokyo.

MacLean, originally from Peabody, was in her first Olympic games after a gutsy run through the U.S. Olympic Trials. She runs professionally for Team New Balance Boston.
