Northfield roadsreopen following weekend’s storm

NORTHFIELD — After multiple days working to repair roads damaged by last weekend’s rainstorm, the Highway Department and subcontractors have reopened Gulf Road, Orange Road and River Road to the public.

Fire Deputy Chief honored for 23 years of service

WARWICK — The Warwick Fire Department held a surprise event last week recognizing newly retired Deputy Chief Joseph Paul for his 23 years of service to the town.

Michael Mankowsky, president of the Warwick Firemen’s Association and new deputy chief, presented Paul with a plaque. Paul also received official citations from the Selectboard, the Massachusetts Call Volunteer Firefighters’ Association and state Rep. Susannah Whipps, I-Athol.

Powers Institute Museum to showcase ‘new’ wedding gown

BERNARDSTON — The Powers Institute Museum at 20 Church St. will be open Sunday, Aug. 1, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Featured will be a wedding gown made by Juliaette Streeter Newton for her daughter Florabelle’s marriage to Ray Franklin on Oct. 7, 1914, according to Bernardston Historical Society President Lou Atherton. A framed wedding photo and announcement, on the back of the photo frame, accompany the gown.

Franklin was a selectman and Powers Institute trustee for many years, Atherton said. The couple resided on South Street throughout their married life. Franklin’s lineage traces back to Ben Franklin, Calvin Coolidge and Robert Fulton.

Three attendants will be on duty at the museum to answer questions.

Farmers’ Market gets $500 grant

NORTHFIELD — The Northfield Farmers’ Market received a $500 grant from Farm Credit East to support the Northfield Senior Center and the Northfield Food Pantry.

According to Northfield Farmers’ Market Manager Marge Anderson, $100 was awarded for Farmers’ Market gift certificates to the Senior Center and $400 is for certificates to the Food Pantry.
