Mary Laurens held on for a marathon victory at No. 1 singles, and visiting Frontier scored a 4-1 victory over Greenfield in a Tri-County League North girls tennis match Tuesday at the Davis Street courts in Greenfield.
Laurens scored a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8 win over Greenfield’s Jenna Keith in the top spot.
“It was an amazing match to watch,” Greenfield coach Alexis Silk said. “Both players were like backboards.”
Frontier swept the singles matches, with Coleman Hartner earning a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 against Greenfield’s Estera Covalenco and Emma Clancy scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 against Mireb Gheorghita.
Greenfield’s top doubles team of Kaitlyn Phillips and Kaitlyn Collins picked up the team’s lone point. The duo upended Frontier’s Isabelle Brown and Madelene Powers, 6-3, 6-3.
At second doubles, Frontier’s Grace O’Leary and Samantha Scanlon held off Greenfield’s Aisha Pruitt Gonzalez and Rory Cronen-Townsend, 6-3, 6-1.
Mohawk Trail 4, Turners 1 — The visiting Warriors swept all three singles matches en route to the 4-1 win over Turners in TCL North play.
Avery DuPree (6-3, 6-3 over Haleigh Greene) set the tone with the win at No. 1, before Paige King (0-6, 6-3, 6-2 over Izzy Farrick) and Palmer King (6-0, 6-3 over Abbi Holloway) capped the sweep with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Turners’ point came at first doubles, where Steph Peterson and Maria LaBelle were 6-0, 6-1 winners. Mohawk Trail’s Winter Garofalo and Phineas Tuttman took a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
Pioneer 95, Turners 45 — Pioneer’s Hailey Ring took first in the 100 (13.7 seconds), 200 (28.9), long jump (14 feet, eight inches) and triple jump (29-1) to lead the Panthers to a 95-45 win on the road against the Thunder on Tuesday.
Sahana Heilman won the 100 hurdles (20.5) and 400 hurdles (1:37) for the Panthers, Brianna May won the mile (7:28) and 800 (3:10) and Caroline Ring was the winner in the shot put (22-10) and javelin (77-1).
Maggie Charlton took the discus (54-8) for Turners, with Raygan Pendriss coming out on top in the high jump (4-0) and Kaylin Voudren winning the pole vault (7-0).
Franklin Tech 74, Pioneer 55 — Brody Williams won the shot put (30-0), discus (72-1) and javelin (92-0) as the Eagles came out with a 74-55 victory over the Panthers in Turners on Tuesday.
Brayden McCord won the long jump (15-4) and 100 (12.4) for Franklin Tech. Pioneer’s Noah DeRuiter won the triple jump (33-8) and mile (5:33).
Four Rivers 15, Amherst 11 — In a rematch of the 2019 state championship game, the Otters got off to a slow start but recovered to pull away with a 15-11 victory on Monday.
“It was a great win for us,” Four Rivers coach Terry Plotkin said. “It’s not too often we beat Amherst so it’s always nice when we do.”
Ben Yu had a few spectacular throws for the Otters, including one that went nearly the full length of the field. Jonah Goldstein played well on both ends of the field and Judan Retzlaff forced a defensive turnover which led to the game-winner.
Fronter 15, PVCICS 10 — The Redhawks earned a win in action Tuesday, with key contributions from handlers Brady Burch and Ngwang Deter.
