Greenfield’s Tess Rancourt set a school record in the shot put on Wednesday, besting the mark with a heave of 34 feet, 5¾ inches to lead the Green Wave to a 71-51 win over visiting Mahar in an Intercounty League girls track meet.
Rancourt also won the discus with a toss of 77-6¼.
“She’s doing great,” Greenfield coach Pete Conway said of Rancourt. “The old record must have stood for 20-plus years. We’re looking forward to seeing her keep going and hopefully get close to 36 (feet).”
Victoria Marin also had a big day for the Green Wave, taking first in the long jump (16-1), high jump (5-6), 100 hurdles (16.3) and 400 hurdles (73.9). Candice Lu won a pair of events for Greenfield, claiming the top spot in the mile (6:56) and 2-mile.
Sam Santos took the javelin (67-5) for the Green Wave while Emma Savoy was the winner in the 800 with a time of 3:00.4. Greenfield won the 4×100 relay (60.8).
Delaney Parker captured a trio of events for Mahar, winning the triple jump (72-3¼), 100 (13.2) and 200 (27.5). Senator Kayley Murphy was the first across the finish line in the 400 with a run of 76.1 seconds.
Frontier 125, Palmer 20 — Lilah Evans took the 100 with a time of 14 seconds and proceeded to win the 200 with a sprint of 28.8 seconds to help lead the Redhawks to a 125-20 win over the Panthers in a Suburban League meet in South Deerfield on Wednesday.
Amelia Sobieski won the shot put with a toss of 29 feet, nine inches for Frontier, with Sadie Ross winning the discus (73-10) and Reilly Isler taking the javelin (101-10). Caroline Crocker took the long jump (13-2½), Summer Sobieski picked up the victory in the high jump (4-6) and Alena Maes-Polan won the pole vault (8-6) to close out the winners in the field for the Redhawks.
Frontier’s Abbe Roberts was the first across the finish line in the 100 hurdles (18.5) while Hannah Mackin won the mile (6:29) and Angelina Egland took first in the 2-mile (14:41.6). Alyson Barnes was the winner in the 400 (67.5) and Abigail Howard won the 800 (2:48.8). The Redhawks won the 4×100 (54.6) and 4×400 (4:50.8) relays.
Greenfield 89, Mahar 47 – Greenfield’s Theo Popusoi was a man on a mission during a boys track meet against Mahar on Wednesday.
Popusoi took first in the long jump (19-7), triple jump (39-3¼), pole vault (12-0) and the 400 hurdles (1:01) as the Green Wave came away with an 89-47 victory over the Senators.
Liviu Mihailicenco had himself a day as well for Greenfield, winning the high jump (6-0), 110 hurdles (16.6 seconds) and 400 (56.8). Mason Meadows took both the 100 (12.0) and 200 (24.7) for the Green Wave while Elliot Cox won the discus (62-9) and Alex Bacigalupo came in first in the 800 (2:30.5).
Greenfield won the 4×100 (50.6) and 4×400 (4:19.3) relays.
Mahar’s Camdyn Johnson was the winner in the mile (5:25) and 2-mile (11:43) while fellow Senators Noah Bailey won the shot put (27-11¼) and Antonio Wozny took first in the javelin (93-10).
Athol 3, Chicopee 0 — The Bears added another tally to the win column on Wednesday, earning a 3-0 sweep over Chicopee in a PVIAC East match.
Set scores were 25-7, 25-14, 25-3.
The match was dictated in the service station, where Athol’s Luke Inniss had an astounding 19 aces and zero errors on 47 service attempts. Colin Mason had a big match on the front line for Athol, recording 10 kills on 20 attempts with just one error. Caleb Leblanc had a strong day at libero, coming up with 14 digs.
“Serving was the story today,” Athol coach Sean MacDonald said. “We did a great job reducing our errors and it really showed in the scores. We’re getting a little better each day.”
Frontier 5, Turners 0 — Frontier’s Mary Laurens got the day started with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Turners’ Haleigh Greene at No. 1 singles and the Redhawks didn’t look back, earning a 5-0 win in a Tri-County North match on Wednesday.
Coleman Hartner picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win in No. 2 singles over Turners’ Izzy Farrick and Frontier’s Emma Clancy came back to defeat Steph Peterson 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles.
Redhawks’ Isabelle Brown and Madelene Powers had a close match in No. 1 doubles with Marla Labelle and Abbi Holloway, ultimately winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Grace O’Leary and Samantha Scanlon closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph in No. 2 doubles over Thunder pair Lilly Spera and Ella O’Keefe.
Pope Francis 5, Mohawk Trail 0 — The Cardinals had the Warriors’ number on Wednesday, as Mohawk Trail suffered a 5-0 defeat in a Tri-County North match in Buckland.
Pope Francis’ Chloe Stevens topped Avery Dupree, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 1 singles while Warrior Paige King suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Elizabeth Goncalves in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Palmer King fell to Cardinal Katelyn Horky, 6-0, 6-0.
In No. 1 doubles, Mohawk Trail’s duo of Elias Crowell and Lizzie Lynch lost to Madalyn Ferreira and Mikayla Messier, 6-0, 6-1. Lydia Foote and Lexi Chasse fell to Paige Cook and Carolyn Lacroix, 8-1, in No. 2 doubles.
Four Rivers 15, Monument Mountain 4 — In its season opener, the Four Rivers boys ultimate team played great zone defense to come away with a 15-4 victory over Monument Mountain in Greenfield on Wednesday.
Jonah Goldstein shut down the middle of the field while Oliver Lagresse and Avani Richardson stifled the attack deep. Gabe Rhodes scored five goals for the Otters.
