The sounds of softball reverberated throughout Murphy Park in Greenfield on Saturday.
After a year away due to the pandemic, the Greenfield Girls Softball League returned to action with Opening Day games for the 2021 season. While there were no parades or festivities due to COVID-19, teams throughout the league did get to play games for the first time in nearly two years.
Here’s a look at the action from Saturday:
Behind a stellar pitching performance from Gloria McDonald (nine strikeouts) and Lucja Yagodzinski (two strikeouts), Descavich scored a 10-1 win over Pipione’s in Ponytail Division play.
Offensive stars for Descavich included Cobi Tyminski and Meghan Collins, who had two hits apiece. McDonald smacked a home run and added a single, while Sophia Rotkiewicz, Abby Moffatt and Charlee Vera all had a hit.
Pipione’s Grace Laurie struck out 11 batters with the help of some strong catching by Sandra Johnson. Taylor Underwood drove in the team’s run while Addison Talbot had a single.
• Elsewhere, Tayler Bergeron struck out three batters in the circle and smacked a grand slam at the plate to guide Camelot Carpet Cleaners to a 16-14 win over Pelletier Electric.
Camelot received hits from Olivia Lemay, Charley Knight and Emmalyn Godfrey, and also saw strong defense behind the plate from Kayden Viencek.
Pelletier’s Emmy Nash finished with four strikeouts. Emma Petersen had a double, while Jaelyn Boliski, Riley Dyer and Maya Laprade also had hits.
• Alaina Toothaker and Lily Marciano each roped five hits in Precision Driving School’s 6-0 win over Franklin First Credit Union.
Addison Martin paced the defensive effort for Precision.
Danielle Zraunig and Mila Phelps registered hits for Franklin First, and teammate Samantha Suhl was the defensive star.
• Aurora Reynolds was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish to propel Elks Club past Freedom Credit Union, 2-0. Parker Walters drove in the game-winning run for the Elks.
Kam Beck was 2-for-3 and Emerson Russell added two hits for Freedom Credit Union.
• Ayva Quiles-Call and Riley Tine led the way offensively as Emblem Club blanked Gilmore and Farrell, 6-0.
Rian Farrell roped a double to the outfield to pace G & F, and also played well defensively.
