School Committee to reconvene on FY22 budget

NORTHFIELD — Because the proposed fiscal year 2022 budget for the Pioneer Valley Regional School District did not pass on March 23, the School Committee will reconvene to discuss the budget and potentially vote on a new one on Thursday, April 8, at 7 p.m.

Northfield resident named among Western Governors University grads

NORTHFIELD — Julie Burke of Northfield has earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Western Governors University, an online university based in Salt Lake City. She is among 14,146 undergraduate and 15,640 graduate degree recipients who have completed their degrees since July 2, 2020.

Ice Out Contest winner announced

WARWICK — Duncan, the concrete “Moore-ish Terrier” statue who is the focus of the Moore’s Pond Beach Committee’s annual Ice Out Contest, was witnessed taking his plunge into the pond at 1:42 p.m. on March 20.

According to Moore’s Pond Beach Committee member Jim McRae, Warwick resident Barbie Zucchi had the closest guess: 1 p.m. on March 20. Zucchi won a hand-painted candy dish and a gift card to Dunkin’ Donuts donated by Barbara Noel, along with the associated bragging rights. There were 49 guesses in this year’s contest, 13 before March 20 and 35 after, ranging from March 3 to April 21.

Leyden Annual Town Meeting, election dates settled

LEYDEN — Annual Town Meeting and the town election will be held in back-to-back weeks at the end of June. A motion at last year’s meeting scheduled the 2021 Annual Town Meeting for June 21.

The town election will be held on June 28, and interested candidates may now seek nomination papers. After meeting with the Board of Health on March 29, the Selectboard voted not to hold a caucus for this year’s election.

Interested candidates may seek nomination papers from interim Town Clerk Bob Hardesty at townclerk@townofleyden.com or 413-774-4111, ext. 3. Hardesty’s office hours are Mondays, 9 to 11:30 a.m., and Thursdays, 4 to 6:30 p.m.

Nomination papers for interested candidates will be hung in the green town posting box outside the Town Offices at 7 Brattleboro Road, so residents can stop by and provide the required signatures for nominees to run.
