Registrations continue for the Don Maynard Memorial 5-Miler, which is going virtual next month.
The 26th annual running of the event was originally scheduled for Sept. 26, but due to COVID-19, race organizers are allowing a two-week window for participants to run the actual course in Greenfield and submit their times.
Runners can take to the course any time from Sept. 12-26. There’s no entry fee, though entrants are asked to register online through the race website (dmmrace.com). Runners can make a donation if they’d like, with proceeds going toward the Don Maynard Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to graduating Franklin County public school seniors. In 2020 (with proceeds from the 2019 race), $500 scholarships were awarded to Jordan Fournier from Mahar Regional School and Josy Hunter from Turners Falls High School.
The website features a map of the 5-mile course (walkers will do a 3-mile loop of the bike path), which is a flat, scenic route through the Greenfield Meadows. The course begins by the Green River on Nash’s Mill Road in Greenfield and continues through the “meadows,” then loops around toward Greenfield Community College. The course finishes with the last mile on the new Greenfield bike path, again along the Green River.
