Tyler Baranowski tossed a complete-game five-hitter, striking out two batters to lift Frontier Alber Hearing Services to a 2-0 victory over Northampton in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Mickey Mantle playoff game on Wednesday in South Deerfield.
Frontier will play Brattleboro in another playoff game, Friday night at 5 p.m. at Frontier Regional School.
Frontier scored the game’s only runs in the first inning. Kyle Barnes singled, stole second and scored when Tynan Creagh’s hit to center field was misplayed. After two more walks loaded the bases, Gehrig Brynda walked to force in a run and make it 2-0.
Defense shined for both teams from there. Maxwell Edwards made a diving stop and threw out a batter from his knees, saving a run. Northampton threatened in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second with one out. Barnes fielded a ground ball, threw to Brynda at first base for the second out, and then Brynda threw home to Dylan Martin who tagged out a Northampton runner for the final out of the game.
