A contingent of area golfers fared well Tuesday, as the first qualifying event for Mass Golf’s Mid-Amateur Championship was held at Westover Municipal Golf Course in Granby.

Four golfers with Franklin County connections appeared destined to qualify, as the top 14 finishers and ties advanced to next month’s championship (Sept. 8-10 at GreatHorse in Hampden).

Crumpin-Fox Club’s Mike Williams and Michael Mertes each carded rounds of 3-over-par 75 to pace the local crew. Williams recorded three birdies on his round while Mertes sank four birdies, and the duo were tied for 13th place as of press time. Ron Laverdiere, who also plays out of CFC, shot 75 and found his way into a tie for 13th place with a late afternoon tee time.

Country Club of Greenfield’s Chris Bourbeau joined them in 13th position. Bourbeau was one of the last golfers off in the afternoon, and also shot 75.

CFC’s Mark Waskiewicz wasn’t far behind, firing a 5-over 77, the same score as fellow club member Keith Burch. Both Waskiewicz and Burch were tied for 27th at press time.

Meadow Brook Golf Club’s Damon Lusk and George Wright GC’s Samuel Russell were the clubhouse leaders after shooting rounds of 3-under 69. GreatHorse’s AJ Oleksak was also in red numbers thanks to a 2-under 70.

Entries for the Mid-Am are open to amateur golfers who have reached their 25th birthday by Sept. 8, 2020. Qualifiers continue over the next two weeks.
