GREENFIELD — A home on Wildwood Avenue sustained extensive damage from a fire Tuesday afternoon, but no residents were injured.
Greenfield first responders were called at around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday to a possible structure fire at 31 Wildwood Ave., according to Greenfield Police Sgt. Todd Dodge, who was one of the first on scene.
“I saw active flames on the east side of the building,” he said.
All occupants of the building, including some birds and a cat, were safely evacuated with no reported injuries, according to Fire Chief Robert Strahan.
“There was extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the two floors of the house, and extensive fire damage to the exterior porch and to the first floor kitchen area,” Strahan said.
Strahan said when crews arrived, they found fire on the first floor — on both the interior and exterior — that extended into the second floor. Firefighters attacked the fire from the inside.
The last engine was expected to leave the scene at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
The road was closed to traffic while crews from Greenfield and numerous surrounding towns worked to battle the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Greenfield Fire Department and Greenfield Police Department.
