A neighbor just alerted me to Buckland’s plan to replace the existing sodium lights with LEDs in Buckland. Everyone knows these will be whiter, harsher, and brighter light than our current streetlights. Worst yet the replacements on Ashfield Street (where I live) and State Street will be fourtimes brighter than lights anywhere else in town, including higher speed roads like 112 and Mohawk Trail.
These LEDS will ruin the night sky and hinder sleep for many Buckland residents. LEDs are an important way to save energy and they don’t have to destroy our environment. There are good options out there and choosing lower intensity lights is an obvious place to start. Lower intensity also uses less energy.
Residents are urged to call or email the town administrator to pass your message onto the Buckland board members. I do not know why the town did not have a public comment period for this plan but now is the time to act. The work is scheduled to start in a couple weeks.
