BUCKLAND — Buckland was recently named one of 12 communities in the state to receive funds aimed at addressing the town’s economic recovery efforts.

According to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the 12 recipients of the first round of funding from the Shared Streets and Space Program were granted between $5,000 and $300,000 for making changes to sidewalks, curbs, streets and parking in support of public health, safe mobility and renewed commerce.

“City and town officials have been rethinking how infrastructure can support the needs of the public to physically distance and we are pleased to be able to offer this funding program to meet municipal needs for quick-start projects,” Gov. Charlie Baker said in the release.  “For several months, people have been keeping to themselves for the most part and now, with more people moving around, communities are setting up elements to help everyone keep spaced-apart as they participate in safe, physically-distanced activities.”

Buckland was awarded $8,500 from the program, according to Town Administrator Heather Butler, which will be used to purchase metal picnic tables for the alleyway between Buckland Town Hall and the building next door, where Buckland Pizza House and Mo’s Fudge Factor are located.

She said the communal space could be used by residents or restaurants in the area, including Buckland Pizza and West End Pub, which is located across the street from Town Hall.

“The way State Street is set up, there are not a lot of areas that the local restaurants themselves can provide outdoor seating,” said Butler. “Having a communal area that is easily accessible to all of the restaurants, I think, will be helpful.”

She said a portion of the funds will also be reserved for any potential street scape changes the town needs to make to better accommodate restaurants looking to expand their outdoor eating options.

“If restaurants are interested in providing additional seating, and they need financial help to make that happen,” Butler said, “we have some resources readily available to spend.”
