SHELBURNE FALLS — Effective immediately, the Shelburne Falls Fire District is imposing mandatory restrictions on all non-essential outdoor water use from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., due to flow conditions in the North River adjacent to the district’s two wells.
According to a notice from Shelburne Falls Fire District Administrative Assistant Jan Morin, when the stream flow sensor drops below 117 cubic feet per second for three consecutive days, the district is required, under the Water Management Act, to restrict water use to help maintain a balance of recreational activities, wildlife habitat and human consumption.
Examples of non-essential outdoor water use include:
■Irrigation of lawns, except by means of a hand-held hose outside the hours of 9 a.m and 5 p.m.;
■Washing of vehicles other than by means of a commercial car wash, except as necessary for the driver’s safety;
■Washing of exterior building surfaces, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks, except as necessary to apply paint, preservatives, stucco, pavement or cement.
Irrigation of lawns, gardens, flowers and ornamental plants via hand-held hoses is acceptable, but sprinklers and soaker hoses are not permitted, the notice states.
Restrictions will be lifted on Oct. 1. The notice states the district has the legal ability to issue fines or shut off water for non-compliance.
