The VFW is very disturbed and saddened by the independent report on the tragedy that occurred at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. It is clear there were serious mistakes made by people, who by their training and experience, frankly, should have known better. Problems at the home need to be addressed immediately, and concrete steps need to be taken now to prevent this from ever happening again.

It is clear from this report the way the Holyoke Soldiers’ home has been managed needs to change. While we understand the need for a change of leadership at that home and the Department of Veterans Services given the severity of the situation and the contents of the report, it is important to hold all those involved accountable. It appears medical professionals were absent or worse, negligent as the tragedy unfolded, and our beloved veterans died. The VFW continues to monitor this ongoing tragedy and urges the investigators to be transparent and thorough.

The VFW concurs with the DAV in requesting that the House and Senate create a special joint committee to examine the way in which the commonwealth cares for its older veterans. The VFW supports Sen. Michael Rush’s proposed legislation which would make the Secretary of Veterans Services a full Cabinet position reporting directly to the governor. We also recommend that the Chartered Veteran Organization Representatives be included on any boards or committees which would have stakeholder oversight of the soldier’s homes.

While it is clear COVID-19 is an extremely dangerous and infectious virus, it cannot be blamed as the sole reason for this tragedy. It certainly did expose long-standing problems at the home and those need to be addressed head on. No stone should be left un-turned and no ideas should be left off the table. Our Veterans who live there deserve nothing less!
