NORTHFIELD — The Selectboard voted this week to cancel the non-partisan caucus and instead require nomination papers be submitted for all candidates in the annual town election, officially scheduled for Tuesday, July 28.

Town Coordinator Andrea Llamas said papers are being sent to any potential incumbents, and new candidates can pick up nomination papers at Town Hall. Town Clerk Dan Campbell said candidates may also have the paperwork mailed by contacting his office at 413-498-2901, ext. 21 or townclerk@northfieldma.gov.

“Nomination papers need only 10 signatures, but it would be wise to have a few more,” Campbell said. “If we don’t have anyone nominated for an office then that office could be filled by write-in votes. Most votes wins.”

Signatures must be from registered Northfield voters. For signatures to be verified, nomination papers are due back to Campbell no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 25.

Friday, July 17, is the last day to register to vote. In-person voting will be held at Town Hall, with polls open from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28. Early voting and absentee ballots are also available by request through the Town Clerk’s Office.

A ballot question will ask residents to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ on a proposal to change the number of Selectboard members from three to five. This will require residents to run for the two new seats, with one carrying a two-year term and the other a three-year term. However, Campbell noted that if the ballot question approving the increase in members does not pass, these two seats, and their election results, would be void.

“While the individual may get votes, the entire motion still might fail,” Campbell explained previously.

An additional three-year term needs to be filled regardless, as current Selectboard member Tracy Rogers has stated she will not run for re-election. Selectboard Chair Alex Meisner and member Heath Cummings’ terms are not yet expired, so they will remain on the board.

Anyone interested in learning more about the open positions and their responsibilities can inquire with Campbell. Open positions that will be on the ballot include:

■One Selectboard seat, three-year term

■Two Selectboard seats, two-year terms

■One Board of Assessors seat, three-year term
